Drinking coffee in the workplace

Published on Aug 25, 2011

WITH over 2.5 billion cups consumed every day perhaps it is no surprise to learn coffee is the world’s fifth most traded commodity – which may explain its popularity in the workplace where its very existence, taste and smell is discussed at great length along with the other, equally important issues of the day!

Perhaps Oliver Wendell Holmes had a point when he remarked, “The morning cup of coffee has an exhilaration about it which the cheering influence of the afternoon or evening cup of tea cannot be expected to reproduce.”

And let’s nail the opinions of the doom-mongers who steadfastly refuse to accept the healing properties of this wonderful, liquid gold. Coffee IS good for you.

If you think the benefits of your first cup are limited to it being merely your early morning turbo boost, you’d be quite wrong. On top of the energy injection, regular moderate coffee intake offers several health benefits including a reduction in problems connected to the gall bladder along with a reduced risk of Alzheimer’s in those drinking on average two cups of coffee per day compared to those who drank less.

And the benefits don’t end there as various studies have highlighted coffee drinkers score higher over their abstemious friends in IQ tests. However, these findings are based on moderate coffee drinker s and as with most thinks in life, moderation should always be the keyword while any possible links with illness or any feeling of being unwell must be discussed with your GP immediately.

Coffee drinkers are proving themselves to be an astute group with price no longer a key determining issue in their choice of coffee as the premium coffee brands consistently outsell their cheaper rivals.

Not only good for you, but good for business too as it stimulates debate and keeps the workforce focussed and in turn, productive. In fact any workforce ought to be encouraged to drink coffee, the right type of coffee – and having entered the world of the coffeerati why not treat yourself to one of our new and exclusive range of mugs to highlight just how serious you are about your favourite tipple!

The UK coffee market is estimated to be worth £900 million while on a global scale approximately 23 million families – many from the poorest regions of the world – depend on the product for their livelihood.

This in turn has led to the rise and popularity of ‘FairTrade’ coffee with every fifth cup now drunk in the UK originating from a ‘FairTrade’ source.
