Neils’ Pro Tip for a Top Americano:

With most machines the hot water is too hot so adding it to the espresso will burn it. There are two options on some machines like the Viva there is a mix valve that I lower the water temperature to 80 degrees C and pour onto the espresso. The other option is to use the water direct from the machine but leave it to stand so it cools a bit first then brew the espresso on top. I also always use a double shot.
